I am starting a series in which I will tell you about various things in blogging and WordPress. In this post, I will tell you about many things which I learnt from my mistakes. I don’t want that other people make the same mistakes which I made because I know how irritating it is to make changes again and again in whole site. If you are thinking to start a blog or if you are a new blogger it is important to know about these things. So, let’s get started.

Decide why you are starting a blog

It is the first thing you must know before starting a blog. Why are you starting a blog? Do you want a platform to just express yourself, your experiences or showcase your talent or you want to make money from a blog? If you just want to write, then free WordPress account is good for you, but if you want to make money a blog with self-hosting will be good for you.

Know the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org

Many people who want to start a blog get confused between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. wordpress.com is a blogging platform where you can start your free blog. The main difference between them is that on wordpress.com you need not buy a domain name and host while on wordpress.org you need to buy a domain name and host. There are additional features in wordpress.org but if you are planning to start a blog only for writing and don’t want to spend money then wordpress.com is the best choice.

Choosing a domain name

A domain name is the address of your website. Think very well before you choose a domain name as it can’t be changed later. Once you set up your blog, domain name can’t be changed. You have to delete your blog and set up another blog if you want to change the domain name of your blog. Once you delete the old blog you can’t set up the new blog with the old domain name, it becomes unavailable. So, think well before choosing a domain name.

Blog blueprint

After choosing a domain name, you should draw a blog blueprint on a paper. Blog blueprint means rough sketch of your blog. Rough sketch means how many pages you want to create, what you want to include in the menu, what will be categories, etc. You should decide whether you want to write on a specific topic like lifestyle, fashion, technology, cooking, travelling, etc. or you want to create a blog where you want to write about various topics. If you will decide this, it will be easy to design a blueprint.

Write down how many pages you want to create. Write down what you want to include in the menu. I will recommend you to create categories if you want to write on different topics. Categories help your followers and other people to navigate and find what they want to read. It also helps search engines to index your blog. Write down all the possible categories. Though, you can do all these things at any time, but I will recommend you to decide all these before starting a blog as it will help to minimize the number of times you have to make changes.

Though, you don’t have more liberty to customize the interface of themes in free blog, but you can make changes in pages, menus, categories and few other things.

Choosing a theme

Once you set up your blog, it’s time to choose a theme for your blog. In free blog, you have limited themes to choose from as compared to personal and premium plan, but they are more than enough as compared to other blogging platforms. Choose a theme which suits your requirement. How to choose a right theme for WordPress blog? To know more about it click here.

Feel free to ask me anything about blogging and WordPress. If you are facing any problem in setting up your blog or anything else, ask me, I will try my best to solve it. Thank you.
